Texas isn’t all the way back just yet.

After ripping off six straight wins—including an upset over Oklahoma—between Sept. 8 and Oct. 13, the sixth-ranked Longhorns fell behind by 17 points at halftime and couldn’t put a bow on their comeback bid as they fell to the Oklahoma State Cowboys 38-35 at Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday night.

The Longhorns actually outscored the Cowboys 21-7 in the second half, but it was too little, too late for Tom Herman’s side.

After Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger helped whittle the deficit to three with a 10-yard jump-pass touchdown to Andrew Beck, Cowboys gunslinger Taylor Cornelius responded and punctuated a six-play, 35-yard drive with a 10-yard scoring scamper.

As it turns out, that proved to be the game-winner.

The Cowboys were up 38-28, and although Texas climbed back within three with 1:46 remaining in regulation following Tre Watson’s one-yard touchdown plunge, that was the last time the Longhorns possessed the ball before things turned heated late:

In all, Ehlinger finished 22-of-42 for 283 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also tallied 10 carries for 47 yards and two scores on the ground.

Any other day, those numbers would have paced Texas to a victory.

However, the Longhorns defense couldn’t contain the Cowboys’ dynamic passing attack, as Cornelius finished 23-of-34 for 321 yards and three scores, two of which were to Tylan Wallace (10 receptions, 222 yards).

With their two-game losing streak snapped, the Cowboys (5-3) will return to the field Nov. 3 for a road tilt against Baylor.

Texas (6-2), meanwhile, will hope to bounce back at home versus West Virginia.
